Linky Links: October Edition

A small roundup of things I read/saw/liked on the internet, in the real world, and sometimes in my dreams.

Let’s start this off with a huge bummer! This interactive article from The New York Times about people who can no longer afford the little luxuries they used to before inflation made me feel sad and angry, but also seen. This quote in particular summed up the feeling very well. Please remember to vote on the midterms this Tuesday!

I was shockingly scandalized by this piece on NYMag about how American chocolate kind of sucks now. Did you know most corporate chocolate is palm oil? We hung the Mast Brothers for less! I’m just saying!

On more chocolate news, the URBN cafe has been stocking Maeve Chocolate — it’s really good! Each bar is like $10 or something but their cute packaging makes up for their diabolical economics.

I really like ‘Have I Got News For You’ on CNN, which HBO Max offered to me on continuous watch after my weekly John Oliver appointment viewing. And guess what? It was good. YouTube defines it as a comedy podcast (??? Genuine question, did boomers ever understand what a podcast is? Or a TV show? I know they all have video now but come on. Whatever.).

The gist is fun: Roy Wood Jr. leads a panel with Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black, with rotating guests rounding out their two teams, and they guess on the details of the news of the day. News to me is that apparently it is a remake of a British show, which I guess explains the panel format. Is America finally ready for a panel quiz show that doesn’t involve Steve Harvey? Here’s hoping!

Many of u need to learn how to stop being a control freak on vacation. Respectfully. (I am afraid).

Nigella Lawson on Bakeoff is so fabulous and has dethroned Kerri Russell as my parasocial therapist (before Kerri, the honor was Holland Taylor’s).

Barack Obama’s pronounciation of ‘H-G-TV!’. Comedy is back baby! Please vote this Tuesday.

Rounding out the British hits on this post is the crown jewel sketch ‘Nigerian Wicked’ from SNL UK, which sees Cynthia Erivo taking a trip to Lag-Oz, where all is not well. I love niche shit like this so much. ‘Because you are very classless’ — maybe one of the funniest things I’ve seen in my life.
